Experience

After completing an engineering apprenticeship I became part of the Engineering design team working as a Hydraulics and Pneumatics design engineer.

Later, after a career change I became part of a software development team developing database solutions for the Call Centre Industry.
In 2002 I started a full time course at the UHI Millennium Institute to study Environmental Science.

After achieving a degree I was employed by Gunn MacPhee & Associates in July 2005. My current role has been to assist with the Environmental projects as well as providing Information Technology (IT) and Computer Aided Design (CAD) support.

Specialism

Since the mid 80’s I have been involved with IT software. Working initially with CAD software and office suits, before progressing onto database design and backoffice server software. During my time at university I developed new skills in Graphical Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing.

Since working with GMA I have specialised in developing environmental knowledge in such diverse environmental subjects such as Waste Management, Land Contamination and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS).

Interests

I have always had an interest in Scotland’s environment and its history. Whenever I can I try to get into the countryside either walking, cycling or/and camping.

My other interest that keeps me busy most evenings is a 7 year old pet Labrador called “Bramble” who insists on long walks.

Gardening is certainly not one of my favourite pastimes, so I am quite pleased that I can now state with some authority that the weeds and long grass are far more environmentally friendly than carefully weeded flowerbeds and mowed lawns. The newts and water beetles in the garden pond, nesting birds and family of field mice in our back garden are proof of this.
